Create a trading income in your social enterprise, it is possible!

When I started as a Social Entrepreneur back in 2013, I knew we had an incredible vision for what we wanted to deliver but I honestly didn't know how we we're going to generate a trading income.

I knew what we wanted to do - sell our programme to big corporate clients - but I had not idea how we would do that, I had NEVER done sales or marketing in my life.

I had spent the first 7 years of my career working in the not-for-profit and public sectors, applying for grant funding to deliver the projects I led. Grant funding was my comfort zone, it felt easy, it's what I thought we could do for while.

But deep down I knew as a social enterprise it was important for us to generate a trading income and NOT rely on grant funding.

And I wanted to believe it was possible.

But at that time nobody could really tell us how to do it. There were no programmes or courses teaching how to generate a trading income, how to sell, how to generate a profit.

We had to figure it out along the way.

And we did.

Whilst others continued to struggle, continued to rely on grant funding, continued to believe it wasn't possible, we secured sales.

After a LOT of trial and error we started to develop our way...our approach to reaching our target audience...our unique sales strategy.

It wasn't perfect but over an 18 month period we generated our first £100k, admittedly through a combination of grants and trading income, but the sales came and grew to become our main source of income. Seven years on this social enterprise is still going strong, with a team of five plus associates; involving nearly 4000 teenagers a year; and engaging hundreds of corporate employees (who's businesses pay to be involved).

We developed a sales strategy and our confidence in selling.

I want you to know....

  • It is possible to generate a lot of income from selling.

  • You can generate a trading income as a social enterprise.

  • You can generate a profit as a social enterprise.

...and grant funding is not easier or better - it's limited, often restricted and usually for a specific period of time.

I set up Share Impact because I was fed up hearing the opposite to these statements.

Frustrated that social entrepreneurs the world over were limiting their potential for creating real change and impact and wanting to help more social enterprises to create a sales strategy that works for them, through trading income (that's unrestricted and unlimited), and generate a profit for financial sustainability.

Because we need social enterprise to be the normal way we do business and for it to be the vehicle to transform society and the way we live on this planet NOW!
