#73 Transitioning to a social enterprise - a brand agency's example with Giulia Iannucci

Giulia is a brand strategist and digital marketing consultant with 18 years of experience gained across the EU, Australia, Asia and the UK. She’s also a passionate teacher and associate HEA fellow working at Kingston University. Giulia firmly believes in the power of purpose-led brands and in the positive impact on society that businesses can have.

KnowThyBrand was first born when Giulia decided to leave the corporate world after her second child was born, in search of something with more flexibility to continue to grow her career while being there for her kids. After a while, something felt amiss, which led to Giulia coming to the realisation that her favourite projects were those she did pro bono for people in need (start-ups, mumpreneurs, community-ran organisations). Looking for a way to give back while still making an income, Giulia knew she needed to transition into a social enterprise - KnowThyBrand Women. She is dedicated to helping women in businesses to build sustainable companies and career paths through strategic branding and effective communication solutions.

Social entrepreneurship is when you listen to your heart, your intuition, and let yourself be guided by what feels like the right thing to do, rather than what may be the traditional narrative about how to do good business. This is why I brought Giulia onto to Creating Social Impact podcast.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Transitioning an existing business into a social enterprise

  • Their business model based on working with different classes of members where the large corporations cover the cost for pro bono work

  • The critical importance of branding when starting or transitioning a business

  • Looking at social enterprises as more of an ethos and a model, rather than a particular type of business that does a particular type of social good

  • Plus so much more!
