How I brainstormed all my messaging for 2020 in an hour

How to focus & plan your messaging for 2020...

This afternoon I spent an hour planning out all my core messaging, blog posts and social media "bucket topics" for 2020.

As a mum I didn't plan to do this today, technically I'm not working, but Rosie was playing nicely and then she went for a nap (after lying with her for 20 minutes) so I took this opportunity to brainstorm and plan my comms for next year.

In 2020 I plan to do blog weekly, email my mailing list weekly (predominantly with blog), get on more podcasts, and post more regularly on FB, IG, LinkedIn and Twitter.

This feels like a lot but I know with a plan it's doable, if I just stay focused and stick to the plan!

But what's my process for planning this content? And how was I able to do it within an hour?

Well it's a process I've borrowed from elsewhere and I needed to keep it super simple, plus I wanted to keep my communications focused and on message in 2020 - so it helps attract my ideal clients, moves my audience forward in their journey, builds trust, gives loads of value and aligns to my sales goals & what I'm planning to sell next year (which I've already mapped out).

So it went like this...

  • What do your dream clients/customers want and need to hear in 2020? What are they really struggling with? What do they want the answer to?

  • What are your 5-7 core/key messages to your audience? (I wrote 6 plus 4 more additional messages which are not core/key but I want to be communicating through my brand) I suppose you can think of this as what do you want to be known for?

  • What's your social mission?

  • What are your obsessions?

  • What do you stand for / against?

I then wrote down all the questions I know my audience have or are searching for on google. And wrote down the things I want to educate my audience about - the things I'm expert at or want to be known for (that are drawn out of my 6 key messages identified above)

I then brainstormed some topics I'd like to pitch to podcasts for - I came up with eleven, which I realised could also all be blog topics.

This exercise helped me generate 64 blog topics/titles which I've added to a spreadsheet and now need to put in to some kind of order and put dates to them.

What I'll actually do is pick 12-16 which I want to prioritise for Q1.

And that's how I did it.

From this I'll also spend some time planning out my social media in 30 day blocks, working with a VA to schedule it all in.

How do you plan your communications for the year / quarter ahead?
